2025 Apologetics Conference
"Practical Apologetics: Engaging Others with Truth & Grace"
The sixth annual Apologetics Conference was held in Congerville, Illinois on November 1, 2025. You can watch recordings of the sessions below. Discussion guides for small group or additional study are also available for each presentation.
All of us want to make Jesus known, as we have known him. This year we provide some practical teaching that can help any Christian take steps to engage familiar and new people with truth and grace. The secular world is providing answers; often without dialog, compassion, or a consideration of Biblical perspectives. At the 2025 Apologetics Conference will looked at how we are equipped to listen, support, and respond to each other with love, respect, and truth.
Main Sessions
More Than Logic: Practical Considerations of Grace and Truth
Joe Gerber (Champaign, IL)
ETR Director Joe Gerber explores the idea that "defending the faith" (i.e., apologetics) is about more than providing logical arguments. Indeed, this session argues that we as human beings do not form our beliefs on logic alone but rather on a number of practical factors that need to be considered when striving to do apologetics well. The plenary is intended to be an encouragement that both love and logic are required.
Unpacking Emotional Barriers to the Gospel
Ted Witzig Jr (Morton, IL)
ACCFS Clinical Director Ted Witzig Jr explores how emotional and psychological barriers can hinder individuals from connecting with the Gospel. Many people carry deep emotional responses toward God, the church, and Christianity - often rooted in family-of-origin issues, trauma, loss, or negative experiences with Christians or church communities. When these wounds are met solely with intellectual arguments, the message often fails to resonate or is actively resisted. Participants will gain insight into common emotional barriers and learn practical approaches for engaging others in ways that are compassionate, relational, and spiritually sensitive.
Adding Evangelism to Your Everyday Christian Walk
Randy & Evie Mogler (Washington, IL)
Labelling Randy & Evie Mogler as "former" missionaries to Japan misses the fact that their entire lives are missional in so many ways! In this presentation, the Moglers encourage us to consider that many of us interact with a wide range of individuals within our spheres of life. We are keenly aware that Jesus has asked us to go to all nations (people), and to "teach them all things whatsoever I have commanded you," and that we are to be about his work (Mt 28:18-20). The Moglers' prayer is that this presentation will motivate and inspire each of us to reassess who the people are around us and intentionally be available for Jesus' work.
Is the Tide Turning? The Resurgence of Faith, Cultural Christianity, and the Need for a Biblical Foundation
Tony Manz (Junction, OH)
Elder Bro. Tony Manz presents. New Atheism (and the companion beliefs in humanism, secularism, and materialism) exerted growing influence among intellectuals after the religious extremism displayed on 9/11. But its adherents experienced a crisis of meaning and no foundation for objective morality. This combined with internal fighting caused New Atheism to splinter. Former atheists and other intellectuals are reconsidering the value of Christianity and the bulwark it provides against great-power authoritarianism, global Islam, and woke ideology. But turning to Christianity because it is good for society is not enough. Christianity is defined by the Bible and is not just a tool for achieving social ends. True Christians believe that the Bible is literally true and become Christ followers. The word of God forms a solid foundation for human value and objective truth.
Breakouts
For God so Loved the World: God, Worldviews, and the Christian
Kevin Schrock (Congerville, IL)
Community health counselor Kevin Schrock begins with definitions and basic introductory information regarding worldviews and explores some fundamental questions and concerns. The key questions that need to be asked to understand and decipher the ideas of the world are presented and used to present the major worldviews that have shaped our world. Schrock concludes with ways to test the validity of these worldviews.
When They Wander: Supporting your Child through Seasons of Spiritual Struggles
Craig Stickling (Peoria, IL)
Clinical Professional Counselor Craig Stickling offers guidance for parents whose children are questioning or have stepped away from belief in God. Through empathy, open dialogue, and understanding. Stickling explores ways to nurture connection, foster trust, and provide spiritual support without pressure. This discussion aims to help families grow together even when beliefs diverge.
In Name Only: Understanding Liberal Christianity
Joe & Heidi Gerber (Champaign, IL)
ETR Director Joe Gerber with his wife Heidi examine the unbiblical assumptions of many mainline denominations (i.e., "liberal Christians") in regard to their view of Scripture, Christian exclusivity, Christian moral values, and more. The Gerbers look at why this unbiblical approach can appeal to men and women and what we can do to protect those we love - our families, churches, and communities.
InsideOutsideIn: From Inward Transformation to Outward Living
Erik Wiegand (Goodfield, IL)
HarvestCall Church Health Ministry Manager Erik Wiegand presents. "Have you wondered how to get started in cross-cultural ministry? It starts with the Christian, the Church, and Jesus! Learn the progression of inward transformation that leads to outward living and God's heart for cross cultural relationships. We will look at practical considerations when engaging cross-culturally."
Lifestyle Evangelism
Randy & Evie Mogler (Washington, IL)
Labelling Randy & Evie Mogler as "former" missionaries to Japan misses the fact that their entire lives are missional in so many ways! A continuation of their plenary session above, this breakout brings practical examples of daily evangelism into view for us. The Moglers' prayer is that this presentation will motivate and inspire each of us to reassess who the people are around us and intentionally be available for Jesus' work.
Clarity in Communication: Understanding Temperaments to Improve Relationships
Robert Herrmann (Princeville, IL)
Home educator and minister Robert Herrmann presents. Christian apologetics requires not only sound reasoning but also effective communication. Communication is an exercise to unify thought regarding a particular concept between two parties. There are two components of communication - transmission (speaking, writing, etc.) and reception (hearing, reading, etc.). Effectiveness of communication is the measure of how well these two components convey thought. This breakout explores the ancient concept of the Four Human Temperaments and how a deeper understanding through biblical perspective can make us more effective communicators. Ephesians 4:29
